Jupiter’s beard (Centranthus ruber) is also called red valerian. It is a perennial plant that will bloom from spring into fall. The plant reaches 1’ – 2’ tall and wide. Flowers are born at the ends of stems in clusters and are pinky-red to scarlet-red. Leaves are gray green. Dead-heading old flowers will promote more flowering. Plants do well on alkaline soils and grow best in well drained soils in full or part sun. Jupiter’s Beard will sometimes sprout some distance from the parent plant if left to seed. There is also a white-flowered Jupiter’s Beard. Jupiters beard is best grown with low to regular water and is hardy to USDA zone 5.
